Two Bay Area girls who are relative newcomers to tennis won their first tournament playing as doubles partners in Corvallis recently.

Allie West, 8, and Michelle Chan, 9, combined to win the doubles title in the tournament, competing in the 12-and-under age group.

“That was a real thrill for them,” said Ed Thompson, the director at the William J. Sweet Memorial Tennis Center and coach for the girls.

The girls also competed in singles, with Michelle beating Allie for the consolation title. In the consolation final, Michelle won the first set 7-6 and Allie retired before the second set because of an injury.

“They played a very tough match against each other,” Thompson said. “That was a wonderful tournament for their first experience and a great learning thing for them.”

Meanwhile, Jamey Moriarty, a member of the Barracudas, a Bay Area team tennis group, won the consolation title in a singles event in the 14-and-under age group in Eugene.

“We've got some kids that are coming up that are out there and representing Coos Bay well,” Thompson said.
